Bear with Headdress Miss Daisy Patterns
Hand Sewing Summer Project
Eventually we are back online after our relocation from Galway to Belfast and we are all settled in our little terraced house (more about this later in the week.) I have been busily working on new sewing patterns and tutorials for the summer season. The first tutorial here is part of the theme felt & feathers and all of the items are designed to fit into a little retro cardboard suitcase I picked up in a charity shop.
The felt and feathers all came from Viking Direct, who have an excellent selection of crafty items online and are very quick to deliver. Link to the Felt. Link to the Feathers.
Bear with headdress
- 2 sheets of grey felt (or any colour you choose for the main bear body)
- 1 sheet of blue felt (or any colour you choose)
- Contrasting embroidery floss/thread
- Buttons for the eyes
- Feathers for the headdress
- Wadding for stuffing
- Embroidery needle
- Fabric marker
Print out the A4 pattern at 100%, to download the bear pattern click here.
Cut out the pattern.
Pin the pattern onto the 2 sheets of felt and cut out.
Un-pin the pattern and leave aside.
Place the 2 buttons for the eyes onto the middle of the face.
Cut a piece of embroidery floss/thread approximately the length of your forearm and separate the 6 strands of floss/thread into 2 sets of 3 strands.
Thread the needle. Separate the front and back of the bear attaching the buttons onto one side of the felt only.
Using a fabric marker draw in an upside down triangle (please refer to image below), followed by 2 lines that curve away from each other.
Fill in the nose with the satin stitch and the curved lines for the mouth with the backstitch. Links to tutorial for both of the stitches are at the top of the page.
Place the front and the back of the bear together again and line up until the match.
Thread the needle with the same colour floss/thread and start joining the front and back together around the outside of the bear with the back stitch.
Start sewing just under the left arm.
Sew all the way around until you reach the top of the leg also on the left hand side.
Lightly stuff the bear with the wadding. Continue on with the backstitch closing the space completely.
Cut out a strip of felt 25cm x 2.5cm.
Select feathers in different colours and sizes.
Place along the strip of felt.
Sew each feather in place.
Wrap the headdress around the bear’s head and sew closed.
