Fabric Easter Egg with Bow

Materials:

• Scraps of patterned cotton (main egg shape) See the pattern for sizes
• Plain cotton (bow) 5″ x 8″ / 12.5 cm x 21 cm
• Scrap of patterned cotton (bow) 3″ x 1 1/4″ / 7.5 cm x 3 cm
• Sewing thread
• Polyester craft filler

Print the pattern at 100% on an A4 sheet of paper.

Tools:

• Paper & fabric scissors
• Chopstick
• Sewing machine
• Printer & A4 paper

To Make:

Download and print out the pattern linked above.

Trace each of the sections onto paper and cut out each one.

From the fabric cut out 4 of oval pieces for the egg and 1 large rectangle & 1 small rectangle for the bow.

Leave the rectangles aside.

Line up 2 of the egg oval shapes together, fabric right side to right side and pin along one side. Repeat on the second set of ovals.

Take them to the sewing machine and sew along one side only using a 1/4″ / .5 cm seam allowance.

Remove the pins and open up the ovals.

Place one open oval inside the other open oval, again fabric right side to right side and pin all the way around.

Take the piece back to the sewing machine and sew all the way around the oval, making sure to leave a 2″ / 5 cm unsewn section for turning and stuffing the egg.

Turn right side out using the base of the chopstick.

Fill with the polyester craft filler, shaping the egg as you fill. Ladder stitch the opening closed.

Leave the egg aside for the moment.

Making the Bow

Take the large rectangle and fold in half lengthways.

Machine sew the short side together leaving the lengthways sides unsewn. Leave a 1.5″ / 4 cm section in the middle of the line of sewing, unsewn. (See 2nd image below) Use a 1/4″ / .5 cm seam allowance.

Open up the tube and place the line of sewing in the centre of the fabric, lay flat. (see image below)

Machine both the open ends closed

Trim off the excess material from the corners, making sure not to cut the line of sewing.

Using the chopstick turn the piece right side out.

Ladder stitch the opening closed.

Using the centre line as a guide, place a knot at the end of a needle and thread and work a running stitch from top to bottom. Make sure the thread is secured at the start because you will be pulling the thread tight to create the bow shape.

Once you have the bow shape created do a few backstitches to secure in place. Leave the needle and thread attached to the bow.

Take the small rectangular piece of fabric and fold in half, right side to right side along the length of the fabric. Machine sew along one of the shorter sides and the length of the fabric, using the same seam allowance.

Pushing the sewn end inside the small tube, use the chopstick to guide it out the open end.

Turn completely and press flat.

Attach the sewn end onto the centre back of the bow and hand sew in place.

Wrap the fabric around the front of the bow and back over to the reverse of the bow. Snip off any excess material you don’t need, fold over the end of the material and hand sew in place on the back of the bow.

Leave the needle and thread attached to the bow.

Pin the bow in position on the fabric egg. Hand sew the centre of the bow to the egg.

Your fabric Easter Egg with Bow is finished.
