How to make:
Print out the patterns just above as instructed and cut out.
From the love heart pattern cut out 5 sets of red felt hearts and 5 sets of white hearts.
Using the blanket stitch sew the red love hearts with the white embroidery thread / floss and the white love hearts with the red thread. Click here for details on how to do the Blanket stitch.
I separated the 6 strands of embroidery thread into 2 sets of 3 each.
Just before you finish sewing the hearts, pour 1 or 2 drops of rose essential oil onto the craft filler and insert a small amount into the heart shape. Only lightly fill. Continue with the blanket stitch to close.
Complete the 5 red & 5 white hearts. Leave aside.
Fold the sheet of white felt in half and place the pattern as marked onto the folded felt. Pin in place and cut out. Unpin to reveal a 9″ x 9″ square.
Taking the 17 ” x 17″ square cotton, open up the material to face you.
Fold in half.
Fold in quarter.
Place the pattern onto the folded material lining up the rectangle sides to the folds of the material. Pin in place.
Cut along the semi circle side.
Unpin the pattern and open up the material and you will have a 15″ x 15″ circle.
Repeat on the second piece of material.
Lay the white felt in the middle of the red & white check material, making sure that it is the same distance from each of the corners of the felt square to the outside of the circle.
Taking the ruler and tailor chalk pencil measure in 3″ from the top corner of the felt and mark. Measure in another 3″ and mark.
Repeat on the left and right sides of the white felt square and and the bottom. Using the ruler join up the marks as demonstrated in the picture below.
Place one of the hearts in the centre of one of the 3″ x 3″ squares to make sure it fits.
Take the felt and the material to the sewing machine, I didn’t pin as the felt was quite adhesive and held on to the material.
Setting my machine to a decorative stitch I machined a straight line along the markings. This can also be done with a straight stitch.
Finally I ran a blanket stitch from the sewing machine along the circumference of the felt square. This can also be done with either a straight stitch or a zig zag stitch.
Taking the circle of material for the outside of the bag. Using the ruler, mark in 1/2″ from the outside of the circle, measuring in another 1/2″ mark again. This is where you are going to create a button hole.
Using the button hole foot on your machine, and following the instructions that accompanies your machine create a 1/2 button hole.
This will be the area that the ribbon is inserted through. If you do not have a button hole foot, you can create the button hole by hand by following the blanket stitch instructions but keeping the stitches side by side.
Place the two circles of material right side to right side.
Pin in place.
Take your material to the sewing machine.
Use a straight stitch with 1/4″ seam allowance, machine sew around the circumference of the circle leaving an unsewn gap of at least 1 1/2″.
Unpin and turn right side out.
Iron flat, making sure to fold in the unsewn area.
Then head back to the machine and sew another line of stitching as close to the edge of the circle as possible.
Moving in 3/4″ from the edge, sew around the circle again.
This creates the pocket to thread the ribbon through.
Place the safety pin on the end of the ribbon and feed it through the button hole all the way around and back out the button hole again.
Make sure there is enough ribbon to allow the circle of material to lie flat then measure out a small looped handle and knot the two ends of the ribbon together.
Pull the drawstring bag closed and open a few times.
The love heart tic tac toe game set is ready.
